LVN saved a motorist's life; RN developed a workplace safety program Local 1000 is honoring two nurses this week--a registered nurse and a licensed vocational nurse--for exceptional contributions.

Anthony Andreola, a licensed vocational nurse, saved the life of a car crash victim. Registered nurse Gloria Pacleb-Cadiz developed a continuing education program designed to make prisons and mental hospitals safer for state employees.

"Our nurses work incredibly hard to make people healthier and safer, and these two have gone above and beyond the call of duty," Local 1000 President Yvonne R. Walker said. "We are proud of Anthony and Gloria."

Members fight for rights

Local 1000 challenges state over restructuring plans

Local 1000 is demanding that the state slow down the restructuring of the medical side of the Department of Mental Health (DMH) to ensure that worker safety remains a top priority and the members' seniority rights and transfer rights are upheld.

"Our members are committed to working with the Department of Mental Health during this transition to make this process fair and trans- parent. However, the department is failing to live up to the agreement we made in December," said Kim Cowart, chair of Bargaining Unit 17 and a registered nurse in DMH. "We will do everything necessary to protect our members' rights."

Napa State Hospital workers protest assaults, form multi-union "Safety Now Coalition"

PRESS RELEASE

Hundreds of Napa State Hospital workers from SEIU Local 1000, AFSCME Local 2620,  CAPT and UAPD rallied on Jan. 19 to demand proper health and safety conditions.

The recent murder of psychiatric technician Donna Gross and an assault that left rehabilitation therapist George Anderson with a factured skull have highlighted an ongoing pattern of violent attacks on hospital employees by patients. Hospital managers and the state of California have refused to take remedial action to correct workplace dangers.

With calls for "Safety Now!," 350 Napa State Hospital employees staged a two-hour lunchtime rally Wednesday to demand better security measures.

Employees and union representatives spoke in front of the main gate, which was decorated with bouquets of flowers in memory of Donna Gross, the psychiatric technician slain Oct. 23 in an attack allegedly by a patient.

Violence that is too close to home (SEIU.org)

By Rebecca King Morrow, RN, SEIU Local 1021

On October 23, 2010 there was tragic news in the San Francisco bay area. A psychiatric technician, Donna Gross, was killed on the job at Napa State Hospital. A mentally ill patient at the facility allegedly strangled her. Napa is a state hospital for the mentally ill that has 2,400 employees for 1,160 patients, of which 995 are forensic patients referred by the courts. Her death was a sad reminder of the unspoken danger health care providers face.
