"It's outrageous that we are learning about this now - just after completing a battle over jobs and work locations at State Fund," said Margarita Maldonado, Local 1000 vice president for bargaining. "It's clear that State Fund's business model isn't working and that management saw these layoffs coming, even when we were fighting to mitigate the effects of downsizing earlier this year."

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) makes 10-year projections about job growth in the U.S., and the Employment Development Department (EDD) extracts data specific to California. The most recent projections are for the time span of 2006 to 2016. While the economy has struggled since the release of these projections, causing probable decreases in the number of projected jobs, we still find it helpful to identify the areas of projected job growth in California for jobs similar to those represented in Unit 15. The following table lists the top eight main categories of these jobs by projected job growth.

Layoff tips for Unit 15

LayoffsLayoffs and SROA notices can be stressful. Fortunately, there are several important things you can do to help yourself.

  • Take advantage of your free and confidential Employee Assistance Program (EAP) benefit. Trained counselors can help you and your family members.
  • Make sure your seniority calculation (months of state service credits) is current and correct.
  • Fax your layoff notice to Local 1000 at 916.554.1269. Local 1000 reviews layoff notices to check for irregularities and inconsistencies with the process.

Local 1000 has identified resources to help members dealing with financial challenges brought on by furloughs or layoffs. Depending upon your situation, there may be relief available to help you deal with a range of issues including food and housing assistance.
